UN General Assembly has adopted a resolution on Georgia

With 50 votes against 17, the UN General Assembly has adopted a resolution that recognized the right of return of all internally displaced persons and refugees and their descendants to their homes throughout Georgia and that underlined the urgent need for unimpeded access for humanitarian activities to peoples residing in all conflict-affected areas in that country.

The resolution expresses concern regarding the violent change of demographic picture in the result of the conflicts on Georgian territory and says that the UN General Assembly supports unacceptability of change of demographic situation in Georgia`s breakaway regions.

The UN General Assembly discussed the issue - delayed conflicts in GUAM space and their influence on international peace, security and development.

The resolution, which was adopted in regards with Georgia, was entitled `Status of internally displaced persons and refugees from Abkhazia, Georgia and the Tskhinvali region/South Ossetia, Georgia`.
Georgian politicians welcomed the adoption of the resolution by the UN General Assembly. They assessed it as the victory of Georgian diplomacy and the defeat of the Russian one.

`Our diplomacy has reached great success not because of the fact that the number of supporters to Georgia has grown and the number of Russia`s allies has shrunk, but because of great blow to Russian policy - Iran, Algeria, Bolivia, Ecuador and many other countries were not found among the supporters of Russia in this discussion,` Iakobashvili said.

Despite Russia`s attempts to fail the resolution recognizing the right of return of all internally displaced persons and refugees and their descendants to their homes throughout Georgia, the UN General Assembly adopted it with 50 votes against 17 on Wednesday.

Russian political experts commented on the adoption of the resolution. They say it is equal to failure of Russia`s foreign policy.

`This resolution indeed is a victory of Georgian leaders, although this victory is so small that it reminds me of a sweetie given to a man dying in his bed. With similar victories Georgia is trying to prove that it is fighting for return of South Ossetia and Abkhazia`, Member of Russian parliament Sergei Markov said.

`When we are in the minority along with Nauru, this of course indicates Russia`s stupid and unsuccessful diplomacy. Now I wonder, Nauru voted in favour of us due to the 50-million contract Russia has with it, or we will have to pay every time. Russian diplomacy is becoming ridiculous, while the resolution is firm`, Analyst of Hudson University Andrei Piontkovski said.

Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili commented on the resolution adopted by the UN General Assembly on Wednesday (September 8). The resolution recognizes the right of return of all internally displaced persons and refugees and their descendants to their homes throughout Georgia and underlines the urgent need for unimpeded access for humanitarian activities to peoples residing in all conflict-affected areas in that country. The resolution was adopted with 50 votes against 17.

`Russia has held a very big diplomatic fight at such level, that Putin made Medvedev call leaders of some countries for several times, as I know. Direct blackmailing was carried out against different countries, attempts of bribing by different means also took place. But the result is evident.

`At this time, in different with recent years, India supported Russia, although Moscow lost several important supporters, when Georgian gained new ones.

`Actually this is a battle between good and evil. Russia resists the resolution saying that people should return to the homes, they were born, return their properties, take their children to the schools they used to go, in short, return their main right to the place of origin, the homeland, the own home, the own territory.

`This is what Russia resists to and in this terms is on the side of the evil. However, fortunately, in this case, the good has gained victory in that term that absolute majority of the countries supported Georgia.

`We should keep this fight on. We are facing the evil, although the good is on Georgia`s side and the acting Russian government is trying to destroy it. We will keep this fight on and nothing can impede this.

`But we would gain our final victory, when the occupants leave our territory and our people return to their homes and homelands. This would be a final victory, but until that we will have to conduct a lot of diplomatic battles by the resources, we possess`, Saakashvili said.
