A Russian military cargo plane crashed near Moscow

A Russian military cargo plane Antonov (Ан-26) crashed on Tuesday in an area in the country's southwest near Moscow, leaving all the 12 crew members dead, the Itar-Tass news agency reported early Wednesday.

The Antonov plane crashed in the border area between the Tula and Oryol regions around 9:30 p.m. (1830 GMT), said the report.

The remains of the burning aircraft were discovered at 2:36 a.m. Wednesday (2336 GMT Tuesday) at a site 100 km south of Tula and the crash was due to a failure of aviation equipment, particularly an engine failure, said the report.

A rescue team has arrived at the crashing site, the report added.

According to the Russian Defense Ministry, the An-22 plane was enroute from Voronezh to Tver.

Sakashvili: Russia has only one way left direct political terror and political rivalry

President Mikhail Saakashvili said the only way that is left for Russia is a direct political terror and rivalry against Georgia. The strengthening of the armed forces of Georgia is a basis for the successful economy and future of our children.

Georgia Says Q3 GDP Growth at 6.7% y/y

Georgia's real GDP grew 6.7% in the third quarter of 2010 y/y and 6.5% in first nine months y/y, according to preliminary figures, released by state statistic office, Geostat, on December 24.

Nominal GDP was GEL 5.39 billion in the third quarter, 17.5% increase y/y, according to Geostat.

Industry sector made 18% of the country’s GDP in the third quarter of this year, followed by trade – 16%; government spending – 12%; transport and communication – 12%; agriculture – 8% and construction – 7%.

Processing industry enjoyed with largest growth in the third quarter with 18.3%, followed by hotels and restaurants – 15.7%; transport services – 13.9%; financial sector – 12.2% and trade – 11.7%.


Agriculture sector suffered 1.8% contraction in the third quarter of 2010, according to Geostat.
Georgia’s economy contracted by 3.8% in 2009.

Georgia and Azerbaijan appoint commercial trains for New Year

Georgian and Azerbaijan Railways are preparing to launch a commercial train to Georgia for the first time.

Due to New Year celebrations arranged by Georgian government, on December 29, first tourist train on Baku-Tbilisi-Baku route will be appointed to take tourists to New Year festivities in Georgia.

Two additional trains will be appointed from Tbilisi to Ozurgeti and Tbilisi to Zugdidi.

Railway administration claims to have carried out necessary activities to provide comfortable trip for its passengers.

MTV and Tbilisi Ink Mega-Concert Deal

In a bid to promote Georgia’s profile in world markets and attract tourists and investors, Tbilisi has signed a deal with the global music entertainment network MTV for a high-octane concert to be televised worldwide, a source close to the negotiations has confirmed to EurasiaNet.org.

The concert, tentatively planned for May or June 2011, will be held in the Black Sea resort town of Batumi, according to Georgian Tourism Department Director Maia Sidamonidze. The performance will take place under the auspices of MTV Impact, a division of the network that uses concerts to expand MTV’s reach in developing countries, with the pledge to use the MTV brand to encourage economic growth [3].

Mc Cain: I am disappointed with Sarkozy s inattention with August 12 agreement

Senator John McCain criticizes Nikola Sarkozy for Russia's not fulfilling of the August 12 agreement. "I am very disappointed that French President does not makes this as a question of first importance.

Russia always is in breach of the cease-fire agreement. This question must be one of the most important problems for the French President. Senator said in his interview with Figaro.

At the same time he said that Russia continues the occupation of 20 percent of Georgian territory. This is not to be left without punishment.

Georgia asks Moscow assistance in investigation of terrorist acts

Georgian side asks the Russian Federation for assistance in the investigation of the terrorist acts. The Georgian Foreign Ministry has already sent an official note asking for mediation to the Swiss embassy.

Tbilisi wants Moscow to help it detention of the two Georgian citizens and Major Borisov of Russian Army who are accused of conducting terrorist acts and at present are on the territory of Abkhazia.

Putin kept his promise of finding jobs for the spies arrested in the US

One of the 10 Russian spies expelled from the United States this summer has been hired as a senior adviser with the country`s state-run oil giant Rosneft, Kommersant cited company sources as saying Monday.

Andrei Bezrukov, who went under the alias of Donald Howard Heathfield in the United States, will serve as an adviser to the president, the business daily reported.

He might eventually be promoted to vice president for international projects. Reportedly, Bezrukov will chair the projects, which are being implemented by Russian Federation in Abkhazia.

Transparency International: Georgian Government has been effective or extremely effective in fighting corruption

Transparency International has published the results of yet another survey on Global Corruption Barometer. The survey says that Georgia showed best improvement results among all other countries in 2010.

According to the Global Corruption Barometer, 77 percent of Tbilisi’s residents state that the Georgian Government has been effective or extremely effective in fighting corruption. Compared to other countries included in this poll, Georgia has the highest rate of respondents who say that their Government’s actions to fight corruption have been “effective” or “extremely effective”.

Georgian Police arrested terrorists recruited by a Russian military officer

TBILISI, GEORGIA - Georgian Police arrested six persons suspected of being behind series of explosions in Tbilisi and in western region of the country in last few months, the Georgian Interior Ministry said.

Police said one of the key suspects was acting under the instructions of Abkhaz-based Russian military officer. The Interior Ministry said that the arrest were carried out on December 4.

Two explosions in separate locations of the capital city left one woman dead overnight on November 28.

Reuters: Russian satellites crash after failed launch

Three Russian satellites crashed into the Pacific Ocean on Sunday after a failed launch, in a setback to a Kremlin project designed as a rival to the widely used U.S. GPS navigation technology.

Russian news agencies said the satellites veered off course and crashed near Hawaii after blasting off from Russia's Baikonur space center in Kazakhstan.

The Khrunichev Space Center said the satellites had failed to enter the right orbit after the launch went wrong 10 minutes after take-off.

Russia waged a covert war against Georgia that included missile attacks, arms shipments to anti-government rebels and car bombings since 2004, a newly disclosed U.S. Embassy cable says.

Among the secret war operations were a 2007 helicopter gunship attack on the headquarters of a pro-government group in the Georgian province of Abkhazia, and the murder of Georgian police officers in the town of Gory. Known inside the Russian security services as "active measures," the tactics employed against Georgia included political disinformation campaigns, industrial sabotage and assassinations.

"The variety and extent of the active measures suggests the deeper goal is turning Georgia from its Euroatlantic orientation back into the Russian fold," said the cable, signed by the U.S. ambassador to Georgia, John Tefft.

The July 20, 2007, cable, labeled "confidential," was written nearly one year before Russian military forces invaded Georgia, and raised questions about President Obama's reset policy with Russia. The White House has limited its opposition to Russia's bullying of former Soviet republics like Georgia to public statements. In the interim, the administration has touted an arms control treaty and Russian cooperation at the United Nations as evidence of better cooperation between the two cold war rivals.

Georgia has become a member of European air space.

An official document was signed Thursday by representatives of 27 EU member countries in Brussels. According to the agreement, restrictions on Georgian companies will be withdrawn and they will be able to operate under the same terms as European companies do.

On their side, Georgian companies will have to approach to international standards and make security warranties stricter.

The agreement on Georgia`s joining the united European Air Space was signed by Georgian Minister for Economy and Sustainable Development Vera Kobalia.

"This is the first agreement of this type. The document will not only make Georgia part of the united European air space, but give change to the new aviation companies to enter Georgian market.

New jobs are also be going to be created at the Georgian aviation market," Vera Kobalia said.

Saakashvili addressed OSCE Summit in Astana
